Qlaira<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Qlaira is a combined oral
\ncontraceptive, commonly known<\/a>
\nas a \u2018birth control pill\u2019 or \u2018the
\nPill\u2019.
\nQlaira is used to prevent
\npregnancy. It is also used for the
\ntreatment of heavy and\/or
\nprolonged menstrual bleeding
\n(not caused by any underlying
\ndisease) in women who wish to
\nuse oral contraception.
\nWhile taking Qlaira you may also
\nexperience the following<\/a>
\nbenefits:
\n\u2022 More regular and lighter
\nperiods \u2013 potentially resulting
\nin a decrease in anaemia (iron
\ndeficiency)
\n\u2022 a decrease in period pain
\nSome conditions such as pelvic
\ninflammatory disease, ovarian
\ncysts, ectopic pregnancy (where
\nthe foetus is carried outside<\/a> of
\nyour womb), lumpy breasts and
\ncancer of the uterus (womb) and
\novaries may be less common in
\nwomen taking Qlaira.
\nQlaira contains two female sex
\nhormones called estradiol
\nvalerate (an estrogen) and
\ndienogest (a progestogen).
\nThe estrogen in Qlaira (estradiol
\nvalerate) is broken down in the
\nbody into a hormone called 17\u03b2estradiol, which is identical to the
\nnatural estrogen produced by the
\nfemale body. The estrogen in
\nQlaira is therefore different from
\nthe synthetic estrogen (known as
\nethinylestradiol) usually used in
\nother forms of the Pill.
\nWhen taken correctly, Qlaira
\nprevents you from
\nbecoming pregnant by:
\n\u2022 inhibiting ovulation (egg
\nrelease)
\n\u2022 changing the cervical mucus
\nconsistency, making it more
\ndifficult for the sperm to
\nreach the egg
\n\u2022 changing the lining of the
\nuterus, making it less suitable
\nfor implantation.
\nWhen the Pill is taken by women
\nunder close observation in
\nclinical trials, it is more than 99%
\neffective in preventing
\npregnancy. However, in real life
\nthe Pill is around 92% effective.
\nThis is because pills might be
\nmissed, or taken with medicines
\nthat may interfere with their
\neffectiveness, or may not be
\nabsorbed due to vomiting and
\ndiarrhoea.
\nLike all oral contraceptives,
\nQlaira is intended to prevent
\npregnancy. It does not protect
\nagainst HIV infection (AIDS)
\nand other sexually transmitted
\ninfections.
\nAsk your doctor if you have
\nany questions about why this
\nmedicine has been prescribed
\nfor you.
\nYour doctor may have prescribed
\nit for another reason.

\nWhen you must not take it
\nDo not take Qlaiira if you have
\nan allergy to:
\n\u2022 any medicine containing
\nestradiol valerate and\/or
\ndienogest
\n\u2022 any of the ingredients in
\nQlaiira listed at the end of
\nthis leaflet.
\nSome of the symptoms of an
\nallergic reaction may include:
\n\u2022 shortness of breath
\n\u2022 wheezing or difficulty in
\nbreathing
\n\u2022 swelling of the face, lips,
\ntongue or other parts of the
