Insomnia – Practical Tips

Sleeplessness can lead to problems concentrating, short tempers, depression and unhealthy habits. Insomnia is classified as prolonged periods of sleeplessness, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. In chronic cases, it can last for months at a time.

Note that, even if you manage to sleep a few hours a night, it can still be classed as insomnia – the diagnosis is based on difficulty falling and staying asleep, not by total sleeplessness.

By following these simple tips, you can help treat sleeplessness;

Keep regular sleeping hours – varying your sleep schedule can make it much harder to fall asleep. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even if you are not tired, can help attune your body to sleeping at certain times.
Avoid caffeine – caffeine from coffee,soft drinks and energy drinks is a stimulant, meaning it can keep you awake. It can also affect your body’s ability to enter deep sleep. Cutting down on the amount of caffeinated drinks, especially in the evening, can help you sleep easier at night.
Create a restful sleeping area – your bedroom should be reserved as a place of rest. Sitting in bed during the day or using devices at night can train your body to stay awake in bed. Make sure the lighting and noise levels can be controlled, for instance with a closed door and blackout curtains, to create a peaceful environment.
Exercise – light to moderate exercise during the day can help you to feel tired at the end of the day. Avoid strenuous exercise in the evenings, as your body may continue to produce adrenaline and make it harder to fall asleep.
Stop smoking – nicotine is a stimulant, and people who smoke often sleep less and have more disruptions throughout the night. Check our Smoking Cessation section for tips on how to quit.
